Chapter 11

Is It Real?

The lookieloos and the curious had already begun to gather in the streets, asking questions, spreading rumors. It was going to be a long weekend.

Guests evacuated from Harvey’s hotel were taken to Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove, for temporary shelter, some still in their pajamas—some with overnight bags over their shoulders. The hotel security personnel and Sheriff Maple’s officers packed up and tagged the clothing, jewelry and toothbrushes of each guest and towed their luggage to the temporary shelter. (When it was all over, everyone was able to reclaim his or her personal belongings. Nothing was reported lost.)

Mobile units from radio and TV stations were moving in. Within minutes men with cameras on their shoulders and reporters with microphones in their hands were confronting the evacuees with questions.

When Special Agent Bill Hubina and his assistant arrived on the scene, just as the mobile unit with the X- ray machine pulled up in front of the casino, even more enticing rumors began to erupt. In spite of the clangor implied by the rumors, the anticipation continued to draw the people to the scene.

Not only was there talk of a bomb, there were stories of terrorists and nuclear devices. But the media have always had a way of getting to the truth, or at least a portion of the truth while adding their own take on the situation. One reporter searched until he found someone who worked in the same department as the guy who had found the bomb, and was told that it was an extortion plot.

“If it is, indeed, an extortion plot,” the reporter announced to his viewers, placing himself in front of a van, where two men from the Douglas-Tahoe Fire Department Bomb Squad were removing a large piece of X-ray equipment, “we’re dealing with someone who has a little more rational behavior. If they blow it up, they lose their profit, or any hope of it.” The camera focused in on the X-ray machine while the reporter expounded on the possible uses for the state of the art piece of equipment.

Inside the casino, on the second floor, men anxiously waited for the X-ray machine, knowing the sooner they could extract the facts, the quicker they would be able to take the next step in their investigation.

It wasn’t long before the Assistant Special Agent in charge of the Las Vegas Field Office, Herb Hawkins, walked into the room. He was a large, clean-cut man, about forty years old, and a seasoned veteran of the FBI. Beside him was bomb expert Special Agent Bill “Blinky” Hubina, a man in his fifties who looked like the all-American dad. (He got his nickname because his eyes would start to blink rapidly when he got a little frustrated or nervous.)

Blinky’s assistant walked in right behind the two men. The assistant seemed as thin and sharp as a pair of shears.

Next through the door came the Douglas-Tahoe Bomb Squad, wheeling in the large X-ray machine. Every agent in the room watched as the machine was set up and the work began.
